My Sister Slapped Me at the Jewelry Store — Then a Colonel Said, “Do That Again, I Dare You”

My mother blinked, completely bewildered.

Vanessa scoffed, though it sounded noticeably weaker.

They had never known.

I had never told them.

In the Hayes household, military service was considered a blue-collar embarrassment, not a point of pride.

They had never asked what I actually did overseas, and I had stopped trying to tell them years ago.

“She was awarded the Bronze Star with a Valor device for her actions,” Colonel Reed continued, his voice echoing off the diamond-filled display cases.

“She commands the respect of generals. She has clearance levels that dictate national security. And you think her place is to be your personal punching bag because she won’t buy you a shiny piece of rock?”

Vanessa’s face turned a violent shade of crimson.

Her vanity simply could not process being spoken to this way, especially not in front of the jeweler she had been trying to impress.

“I don’t care what she did in some sandbox!” Vanessa shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me.

“She’s a miserable, jealous spinster! My fiancé, Brandon Croft, makes more in a month than she makes in ten years. He’s a titan in commercial real estate! He would buy and sell your entire base if he wanted to! Anthony, call the police right now and have this man arrested for trespassing!”

Colonel Reed didn’t flinch.

In fact, a slow, terrifying smirk began to spread across his weathered face.

He looked at Vanessa, then at Caroline, and finally, he looked over his shoulder at me.

“Brandon Croft?” the Colonel asked, his eyebrow raising in genuine amusement.

“CEO of Croft Enterprises?”

Vanessa lifted her chin triumphantly.

“Yes. And when he hears about this—”

“Oh, he’s not going to hear about anything, ma’am,” Colonel Reed interrupted, pulling a sleek black smartphone from his pocket.

“Because Mr. Croft currently doesn’t have access to his phone. Or his bank accounts. Or his freedom.”
