My Sister Slapped Me at the Jewelry Store — Then a Colonel Said, “Do That Again, I Dare You”
Three times.
Then, the automated carrier message echoed loudly in the quiet room: The number you have reached has been disconnected or is no longer in service.
Vanessa dropped the phone.
It hit the floor with a sickening crack, the screen splintering into a spiderweb of shattered glass.
Anthony was already tapping furiously on an iPad near the register.
A moment later, all the color drained from his face.
He looked up at my mother and sister with an expression of absolute disgust.
“The deposit Mr. Croft made for the custom wedding bands,” Anthony announced, his voice carrying clearly across the room.
“The wire transfer just bounced. The bank has flagged the account for frozen assets due to federal investigation.”
Caroline let out a sound that was half-gasp, half-sob, clutching her chest as if she had just been physically shot.
She stumbled backward, collapsing into one of the velvet chairs, her face pale and utterly horrified.
“No… no, no, no. The wedding. The country club. The deposit for the florist…”
“Actually, Miss Hayes,” Anthony continued, stepping out from behind the counter.
His eyes fell onto the massive, gaudy engagement ring resting on Vanessa’s trembling hand.
“Mr. Croft purchased that engagement ring from us four months ago on a financing plan. A plan that is evidently backed by fraudulent funds. I am going to have to ask you to remove the ring immediately. It remains the legal property of Kensington Jewelers until paid in full.”
Watching my sister’s ego shatter was like watching a skyscraper implode.
It was terrifying, destructive, and impossible to look away from.
Vanessa backed against the wall, clutching her left hand to her chest like a frightened child.
“No!” she sobbed, her mascara beginning to run down her cheeks in dark, ugly streaks.
“It’s mine! He gave it to me! You can’t take it!”
“Take it off, Vanessa,” I said.
It was the first time I had spoken in five minutes.

Editing for example Brandon looked down on her at the jewelers but he was in custody.
