The Burden

My grandfather, Arthur Rhodes, had just turned eighty — a man who’d built an entire chain of building-supply stores across Colorado from nothing, and the only person in my extended family my parents had ever seemed genuinely afraid of.

He decided to throw a big birthday party, invite the whole extended family, and called me himself.

“I want you there, Elena,” he said, his voice calm but carrying a firmness I rarely heard from him.

“Not for appearances.

I have something I need to say, and I want you there when I say it.”

I hesitated, dreading having to face my parents in front of the whole family, but something in his voice made me trust him and agree.

The party was held at his private restaurant on the outskirts of Denver, with nearly fifty relatives and old friends in attendance.

My parents sat at the head table, Vanessa beside them, all three of them laughing and chatting, with no idea what was coming.
