The Burden
I was in the hospital for three days.
For all three of those days, my parents didn’t call, didn’t visit, didn’t send a single message beyond that text that night.
I had plenty of time to think — not in a burst of rage, but in a cold clarity I’d never let myself have before.
The day I was discharged, the first thing I did when I got home, before I’d even had the chance to hold my kids, was open the banking app on my phone.
I canceled every automatic transfer to my parents — the mortgage payment, the insurance, all of it.
I blocked both my father’s and my mother’s phone numbers, and blocked them on every social media platform too.
I didn’t write a single message explaining why.
I figured that after eight years of silently carrying them, I’d earned the right to leave in silence too.
