The One Who Always Stood Behind

I found out one afternoon in November, when I was twenty-one, stopping by Alessandro’s apartment earlier than planned to return a jacket he’d left at my place.

He wasn’t home — the housekeeper said he’d just stepped out to buy groceries, and let me wait in the living room.

On the coffee table, next to the TV remote, was a delicate silver bracelet set with a pale blue stone.

I recognized it instantly.

It was the bracelet our grandmother had given Valentina alone on her eighteenth birthday — not a shared gift like usual, but engraved with “V. Romano” on the inside, meant for her and her only.

I’d seen that bracelet on Valentina’s wrist hundreds of times.

There was no reason for it to be sitting on my boyfriend’s coffee table.

When Alessandro came home, I asked him directly.

He froze for exactly half a second — long enough for me to notice, short enough for him to recover.

“Oh, Valentina stopped by the other day to return a book she borrowed from the family, she must have left it behind,” he said, his voice almost perfectly calm.

“You know how she is, always forgetting things.”

The explanation was reasonable enough that I had nothing to argue with.

But a cold, formless feeling settled into my chest that day — one I kept burying under every rationalization I could find, because I didn’t want to believe that the man I loved and my own twin sister could betray me at the same time.
