THE FATEFUL PILL
The great hall of Alderbury Hall, usually reserved only for the family’s most important occasions, had been rearranged with a long table, surrounded by every adult member of the family, with Mr. Aldous Grey seated at one corner, and Oliver sitting beside his father, his face tense but no longer avoiding my gaze the way he had the first time.
My grandfather opened the meeting in a solemn voice.
“Today, Isabelle will be the one presenting,” he said, his eyes sweeping over everyone in the room.
“I ask that everyone hear my granddaughter out fully, before anyone speaks in response.”
I stood, my hands trembling slightly but my voice steady as I began, opening the file I’d spent two weeks preparing.
“I’m not standing here for revenge,” I said, looking directly at each person around the table.
“I’m standing here because I went and found the truth myself, after nearly losing my life to something this family chose to look away from for years.”
I played the security footage on the large screen, pointing out every detail, the time, the angle, Oliver’s build and gait.
“This is Oliver, standing by the tree where my jacket was hanging, four minutes before I went riding,” I said, my voice not wavering.
Aunt Vivienne shot to her feet, her face draining of colour.
“That footage isn’t clear at all, how can you possibly be sure that’s Oliver?”
I didn’t let her continue, placing the real blister pack on the table, directly in front of her.
“Because I found this, in Oliver’s shorts pocket, in the unwashed laundry basket at Alderbury,” I said.
“My real hydrocortisone, with my name on the label, the batch number matching my most recent prescription. Mrs. Pruitt can confirm exactly where we found it.”
The whole room fell silent, every eye fixed on the pills on the table.
“I also have a written statement from Freddie, who heard Oliver talking to himself right there in the hospital, saying he only ‘wanted to see if I was really sick,'” I continued, setting Freddie’s paper down beside the pills.
“And most importantly,” I said, turning to look at Oliver, “I met with Oliver privately before coming here. Oliver, would you like to tell everyone yourself what you told me?”
