“Take That Filthy Gear Outside,” Sister Slandered — Until The Four-Star General Saluted Me.

Fluorescent lights hummed a low, sterile tune in the staging area of the FBI’s New York Field Office.

It had been thirty-six hours since I walked out of my parents’ mansion, but sleep was a luxury I had firmly denied myself.

The revelation inside the Pentagon SCIF had shifted the entire paradigm of the operation.

This was no longer just a foreign intelligence extraction; it had morphed into a massive domestic counter-terrorism raid, and because of my intimate knowledge of the target, General Brooks and the Joint Chiefs had placed me at the tip of the spear.

Standing in front of a whiteboard covered in blueprints of the Apex Horizon Capital skyscraper in lower Manhattan, I adjusted the cuffs of my pristine Class A dress uniform.

The mud-caked tactical gear was gone, replaced by the sharp, authoritative olive-drab jacket, rows of commendation ribbons, and the gleaming oak leaves of my rank pinned to my shoulders.

I was flanked by two dozen heavily armed federal agents from the FBI’s Cyber Division and a specialized tactical breach unit.

“Listen up,” projecting my voice across the crowded briefing room, commanding the attention of the seasoned agents with the same effortless authority I used in the mountains of the Hindu Kush.

“At exactly zero-nine-hundred hours, the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange will ring.

That is when Apex Horizon’s server traffic peaks, and that is when the malicious code is most vulnerable to extraction without triggering their automated deletion protocols.

We are executing a hard breach of their server farm on the forty-second floor, and simultaneously taking custody of their executive suite on the forty-fourth.”

Special Agent in Charge Harrison, who had flown up from D.C. with me, nodded grimly.
“We have federal warrants for the seizure of all digital assets and the detainment of all C-suite personnel for questioning regarding federal espionage and domestic terrorism charges.
Nobody leaves that building.”

“Our primary person of interest is Bradley Preston,” tapping a photograph of Bradley’s arrogant, smiling face pinned to the board.

“He manages the high-frequency algorithms.

He may be an unwitting proxy, a useful idiot who sold server space to the wrong shell company without doing his due diligence.

Or, he may be fully complicit.

We treat him as a hostile threat to national security until proven otherwise.

Am I clear?”

“Crystal, Major,” the tactical commander replied.

“Let’s move out,” grabbing my cover and securing it on my head.

The motorcade of armored black SUVs cut through the morning Manhattan traffic with aggressive precision, sirens wailing and lights flashing, parting the sea of yellow cabs like Moses at the Red Sea. We pulled up to the glittering glass facade of the Apex Horizon building right as the clock struck eight-fifty-five.

“FBI! Nobody moves! Step away from the security desks!” the tactical commander barked, immediately taking control of the elevator banks.

We ascended to the forty-fourth floor in silence.

The elevator chimed softly as the doors slid open, revealing an opulent, sprawling office space decorated in brushed steel and expensive modern art.

It reeked of the same pretentious wealth that had suffocated me in my parents’ home.

Dozens of analysts and traders were glued to multi-monitor setups, their fingers flying over keyboards.

“Federal agents! Hands off the keyboards! Step away from your desks immediately!” Harrison roared, flashing his badge.

Pandemonium erupted.

Traders panicked, knocking over expensive coffees and scrambling backward as armed agents flooded the trading floor.

I ignored the chaos, my eyes locked on the glass-walled executive suite at the far end of the room.

Through the glass, I could see Bradley Preston.

He was standing behind his massive oak desk, a phone pressed to his ear, his face turning a sickly shade of gray as he watched the federal raid dismantle his empire in real-time.

I marched straight toward his office, my polished shoes clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.

I didn’t bother knocking.

I pushed the heavy glass door open, the federal agents stepping aside to let me enter first.

Bradley dropped the phone.

It clattered loudly against the desk.

He was wearing another bespoke suit, looking every bit the untouchable Wall Street kingmaker—until he looked at me.

His eyes darted from the armed FBI agents filling his doorway to the gleaming medals on my chest, and finally to my face.

The sheer, unadulterated terror that washed over him was profoundly satisfying.

“Riley?” he whispered, his voice cracking, completely devoid of the frat-house bravado he had wielded at the engagement party.

He instinctively cradled his wrist, the one I had nearly broken two days prior.

“What… what is this?

What are you doing here?”

“It’s Major Gallagher, Mr. Preston,” stepping right up to his desk, planting my hands firmly on the polished wood, and leaning in close.

“I told you that you were mishandling secured government property.

I also told you that if I had let you take my bag, you’d be answering to federal investigators.”

“I… I don’t understand,” he stammered, backing up against the floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the city he thought he owned.

“This is a mistake.

I run a legitimate firm!”

“You run a compromised server network that is currently funneling malicious data from a known terrorist cell directly into the United States power grid,” stating the facts with cold, unwavering precision.

“You sold access to our nation’s infrastructure so you could shave a fraction of a penny off your high-frequency trades.

Your aesthetic is officially ruined, Bradley.”

Harrison stepped into the office, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “Bradley Preston, you are under arrest for suspicion of violating the Espionage Act, cyber-terrorism, and conspiracy against the United States. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Bradley’s knees physically buckled.

He collapsed into his expensive leather chair, burying his face in his hands, completely broken.

I stood perfectly straight, watching as the federal agents hauled my sister’s arrogant fiancé out of his glass tower, knowing the shockwaves of this morning were about to hit my family in Connecticut like a catastrophic earthquake.
