Her Shoulder Hurts, Daddy…” — Navy Single Dad Rescued a CEO, Then the Truth Broke Him

Across the city, Alaric was losing his battle.

He had packed the go-bag.

He had mapped a route to a small town in Oregon where he knew a guy who could get him a job at a logging camp.

No questions asked.

But as he zipped the bag shut, a sound came from the bedroom.

It was a cough.

Not a normal cough.

A deep, rattling wheeze that sounded like tearing wet paper.

Alaric dropped the bag and sprinted into the room.

Lily was sitting up in bed, clutching her chest.

Her face was pale, and her lips were taking on a terrifying bluish tint.

Her shoulders heaved as she fought to draw air into her narrowed airways.

“Daddy,” she gasped, her eyes wide with panic.

“Can’t… breathe.”

“I got you, bug. I’m right here.” Alaric’s hands flew to his medical bag.

He grabbed her albuterol inhaler.

He pressed it to her lips and squeezed.

Lily inhaled, but the medication barely reached her lungs.

The inflammation was too severe.

She coughed violently, her tiny body shaking.

Alaric checked her pulse.

Fast.

Too fast.

She was going into severe respiratory distress.

The weather, the cold, the stress of the past two days—it had triggered a massive asthma attack.

“Okay, okay,” Alaric muttered, trying to keep his voice calm while his heart pounded against his ribs.

He carried her into the bathroom, turned the shower on as hot as it would go, and closed the door to create a steam room.

Ten minutes passed.

The steam did nothing.

Lily’s breathing grew shallower.

The blue around her lips deepened.

Alaric’s medical training was screaming at him.

She needed a nebulizer.

She needed intravenous steroids.

She needed a hospital, immediately.

But a hospital meant IDs.

It meant insurance forms.

It meant the system would log Lily Pendelton into a database.

It meant the people who had hunted them five years ago might find them.

He looked at his daughter, gasping for life in his arms.

There was no choice.

To hell with the system.

To hell with the billionaires.

He grabbed the keys to the Ford, wrapped Lily in a thick blanket, and ran out into the storm.
